East-West Economic Development Center was established to provide businesses in China and the United States with information and education to develop growing relationships between businesses in our two countries.
Our vision is to create a collaborative community of business leaders using innovation, technology and understanding to cultivate economic development between China and the United States.
Global Economy
Advances in technology are rapidly creating opportunities for business of all sizes to compete in the global marketplace. The Internet and the broadband infrastructure supporting it has made it possible to move digitized information to nearly anywhere in the world instantly. In addition, the cost of communication has become inexpensive. Software standards allow for components of work to be shared and completed by workers anywhere. This allows businesses to develop processes that flow work easily to the point where it can be completed with the highest quality and lowest cost.
The advantages of competing in the global economy have now come to the level of the small business. In the past large countries ruled international trade. Later large, multi-national corporations shaped the world markets. Today a small business in China can provide goods and services to a large business in the United States. An engineered products business in the United States can contract for component manufacturing with a Chinese business to reduce cost without sacrificing quality or lead-time. A small business in the United States can collect digitized recordings from physicians who interpret medical images, send an electronic file to a small business in China that transcribes the file into the format for the patient’s medical record, returning it for posting before the next day begins.
China
China’s economy is growing rapidly. Since it entered the World Trade Organization, China has begun to address regulatory issues to promote the ability to attract investment and compete in the global economy. China’s population of over 1.3 billion is both a source of low-cost labor and a growing population of consumers as their economy continues to grow. Many Chinese now learn English as part of their education programs which will make it much easier for American business people to communicate in a country with many dialects of Mandarin or Cantonese. China is investing in both modern equipment and modern management systems. Opportunities for business in the United States to successfully partner with businesses in China have never been greater.
United States
The United States enjoys a leadership position in the global economy. Businesses in the United States are known for innovation and technology. It has an education system that continues to produces highly skilled engineers, medical professionals, researchers and business managers. Major universities actively recruit the best and brightest candidates from all over the world to study in the United States. America’s population of over 300 million is the world’s leading group of consumers, having both an appetite for the best and the ability to purchase. Wages, benefits and government regulation has increased cost and threaten United States businesses’ ability to compete. The United States must evolve its economy to take advantage of leadership in innovation and technology. While moving more work to sources of high quality and low cost production, it must evolve its workforce to support and maintain leadership in innovation and technology.
East-West Economic Development Center
At East-West, our role is to facilitate and foster healthy business relationships that support both the businesses and governments of China and the United States. We will work with businesses in China and the United States to identify business partners and to understand the laws, the politics, the cultures, the practices and the logistics to be successful. As a membership organization we will strive to listen to our members to constantly improve and evolve our services to meet the needs of our members.
